Egg Donation

Not-So-Genius Egg Donor Advertisement

I just stumbled upon this website containing a solicitation for a “Genius Asian Egg Donor”. The only thing on the site is this:

Genius Asian Egg Donor Needed – $35,000 compensation

We are a couple seeking an Asian egg donor to help build our family. You should have or be working on a university degree from a world-class university, you should have high standardized test scores, and preferably have some outstanding achievements and awards. We prefer Asian/Oriental race, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese. You should be between 18-35 years old.

We are happy to pay you up to $35,000 for your egg donation.

An example of our ideal egg donor: 21 year old Chinese MIT student with A grade point average, near-perfect SAT score, several awards in high school and university. She wants to be an egg donor in order to help bring a child into the world with the same special gifts she has.

Your eggs will be fertilized with sperm from the husband, and the resulting embryos used to impregnate the wife, or possibly a surrogate mother.

About us: we are a highly educated couple, but we are unable to have children due to infertility of the wife. The husband is a highly accomplished scientist/mathematician and businessman, the wife has a good university degree. The husband is of European race.

We value education, and we live in one of the best school districts in the world. We hope that our child will be a top student, as each of us was, and that he/she will be able to go to university at MIT or Caltech or other top university.

Thank you for helping us build our family.

While a “whois” search reveals little about this site, my gut tells me it is a sham. It is too over-the-top and embodies every offensive stereotype imaginable. I have a few theories about this site. First, and perhaps the most unlikely, is that this url was purchased by an individual or entity with a clear agenda in opposing assisted reproduction and this is used as fodder for why the industry ought to be regulated. Alternatively, the site is owned by an egg donor program hoping to solicit hard-to-find Asian donors and intentionally kept the registration ownership information private so as to avoid the justified criticism that would be directed at them. I

The more likely scenario is that the advertisement is a hoax. The Registrant on the site is an individual identified by the name of “Will Naylor” who, curiously, also owns more than 7,000 other web domains. Given how long this ad has been posted and the 16 different name servers over the past 5 years, my guess is that it is nothing more than a squatter hoping one day to profit by selling the url to a donor program.

Regardless of the underlying motivation by the website owner, the “advertisement” is offensive, violative of ASRM guidelines, aberrational and contemptible.
