Paul Ryan, Cultural Extremist

Much of the focus on Mitt’s veep selection has been on Paul Ryan’s economic agenda and policies.  Ryan, if you will recall, has been advocating for years a plan that would essentially turn Medicare into a system of private vouchers that senior citizens could then use to acquire alternative care.

However, little attention has been given to Ryan’s extremist cultural agenda that places him in the middle of his fellow right wing mouth-breathers who want to turn back the clock on choice, equality and women’s rights.  For example, on abortion, Ryan is opposed to abortion for any reason including in instances of rape and incest and originally won his congressional seat by running to the right of his opponent on this issue. Ryan was also a cosponsor of the Sanctity of Human Life Act, a federal bill defining fertilized eggs as human beings, which, if passed, would criminalize some forms of birth control and in vitro fertilization. On LGBT rights, Ryan has voted against bills allowing gay and lesbians to adopt children, called Obama’s opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act, is opposed to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and, surprise, voted against expanding federal hate crime laws to protect the LGBT community.

Obviously, we’ll be writing on Ryan’s cultural extremism as the campaign trudges on…
