A recent change to Thai law meant that babies automatically acquired the citizenship of the Thai surrogate mother

Following weeks of diplomatic and bureaucratic wrangling, it was announced yesterday that Israel issued passports to the first group of Israeli babies born through surrogacy arrangements in Thailand.

The remaining babies still without passports are expected to be issued with passports in the next few days allowing the babies to go to Israel. Many of the couples have been separated, with one parent in Israel and the other in Thailand with their newborn abby

Complications arose following a law introduced recently in Thailand which afforded citizenship automatically according to the citizenship of the birth mother.
